In a proactive move to ensure public safety during the upcoming 2024 General Elections, the Ghana Police Service conducted a comprehensive security briefing at Happy FM studio at Asylum Down to assure media institutions that the police is committed to insuring security and maintaining peace during the electoral period and beyond.
A high-level police delegation led by DSP Alexander Asamoah from Police Headquarters visited Happy 98.9FM to discuss security preparedness and establish a collaborative approach to preventing potential security threats. DSP Asamoah emphasized the critical nature of their visit, stating that their primary objective was to engage directly with media organizations and understand their specific security concerns.
Dr. Timothy Karikari, Director of Broadcasting at Global Media Alliance, provided insights into the station’s unique geographical position. He noted that within a one-kilometer radius, four major political party headquarters are located, including NPP, NDC, CPP, and PNC, with potential additional political offices from emerging parties like New Force and Movement for Change “Asylum Down has become a hub for political parties,” Dr. Karikari explained, recalling previous election-related incidents where staff faced potential security risks.
The police delegation, acting on direct instructions from Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, assured enhanced security measures for the area. DSP Asamoah detailed their comprehensive approach, which includes increased patrols starting from 8 pm, visible police presence with patrol cars and flashlights, and a commitment to rapid response to any reported security concerns. Special attention will be given to preventing phone and bag snatching incidents that have been reported along the nearby stretches.
The police representatives were particularly clear about their communication strategy. “We will continue to engage until instructed otherwise,” they explained, urging media organizations and the public to maintain open lines of communication. They emphasized that immediate reporting of any suspicious activities would trigger a swift and professional response.
Happy FM expressed gratitude for this proactive initiative, noting a significant shift from previous years when media houses had to actively seek police protection. Dr. Karikari particularly praised the visibility and preparedness demonstrated by Dr. Dampare’s team, highlighting the importance of such preemptive security measures during sensitive periods like elections and holiday seasons.
