The Ghana Police Service has arrested the driver of a Hyundai truck in connection with Thursday’s accident involving a newly acquired train from Poland on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line.
According to a statement released by the Police, their preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, whose truck bore the registration number GS 9018-20, allegedly left the vehicle unattended and obstructed the rail lines.. This led to the collision with the train during its test run on April 18th.
“Police investigation into the incident continues,” the statement added.
Reports indicate the truck driver had been making a delivery of cement blocks when the vehicle became stuck on the rail line after he was unable to maneuver it through an underpass bridge along the route.
The Minister of Railways Development, Peter Amewu, confirmed that engineers are currently working repair the train..
While no injuries were reported from the incident, the arrest of the truck driver suggests authorities are treating the obstructed railway line as a punishable offence that endangered the safety of rail operations.
