Parliament suspends sitting following John Kumah’s demise

MPs are powerless without their constituents- Hubert Baidoo

Parliament has announced the suspension of today’s scheduled sitting in light of the tragic passing of Dr. John Kumah, Member of Parliament for Ejisu and Deputy Finance Minister.

Dr. Kumah, who reportedly succumbed to a short illness early this morning, left a void in both Parliament and the government.

Upon receiving the news of his demise, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin called for a 10-minute break, which eventually extended to around 30 minutes as members grappled with the shock and sorrow.

Most legislators, visibly affected by the news, found it difficult to proceed with the day’s agenda, which included debating President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address.

Despite efforts to resume proceedings, it became evident that the House was not in the right frame of mind to continue the debate.

In a somber atmosphere, the Speaker instructed that only one question on the debated matter be entertained. However, a legislator, sensing the mood of the House, proposed adjourning the session.

Recognizing the collective grief of the MPs, Speaker Bagbin adjourned the proceedings to Friday, March 8, at 10 am, allowing members time to mourn the loss of their colleague and gather themselves before resuming parliamentary business.
