Over 200 supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Assin South, including the constituency secretary, have defected to join independent candidate Joseph Kofi Damtse, a former parliamentary aspirant.

This major defection has caused a stir in the political arena, with many speculating about the reasons behind such a significant shift.

The defectors expressed dissatisfaction with the NPP, citing unfulfilled promises and neglect of their constituency. They view Mr. Damtse’s independent candidacy as a fresh start and a genuine opportunity for meaningful change.

They believe that Mr. Damtse’s leadership qualities make him the ideal candidate to address key challenges such as unemployment and inadequate infrastructure in the constituency.

According to the defectors, the NPP has consistently imposed candidates on them, disregarding their preferences and they have pledged their unwavering loyalty to Mr. Damtse, saying they will support him wherever he goes.

They also recalled that Mr. Damtse had been vetted and selected as the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the 2020 elections but was later removed by the party’s leadership.

The defectors accused the NPP of taking their support for granted, assuming they could win the seat without delivering on their promises.

They added that Mr. Damtse has already begun assisting them by providing job opportunities, and they are confident that he will bring the transformation they seek.
