The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) has strongly opposed plans to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Their stance comes in response to an announcement by Energy Minister-Designate John Jinapor on Monday, January 13, regarding the Mahama administration’s intention to involve the private sector in electricity distribution. A seven-member committee is set to be formed to explore the privatization process.
PUWU contends that privatizing ECG is not the appropriate solution to the challenges facing the power distribution sector.
General Secretary of PUWU, Timothy Nyame underscored the need for dialogue to address the issues within ECG.
The union has urged the government to prioritize collaboration and internal reforms instead of privatization, warning that such a move could negatively affect workers and the broader energy sector.
