A clash between police and supporters of a candidate during the Council of State election re-run in the Ashanti Region has resulted in one arrest.
The suspect, reportedly a supporter of former NDC Chairman Yaw Obimpeh, was among those who defied police instructions to remain behind the barricades at the venue.
Today’s election is a re-run of last week’s vote, which was abruptly halted after a group of thugs attacked Electoral Commission (EC) officials and destroyed several materials, including cast ballot papers.
In response, the police enhanced security for the re-run. Vehicles are now barred from entering the election venue, with about six police-manned barricades set up along the streets leading to the Prempeh Assembly Hall.
Additionally, the streets have been closed to traffic.
Hundreds of police personnel, armed with crowd control equipment, have been stationed at the venue.
