Odartey Lamptey fears Ghanaians will blame Asamoah Gyan for any setbacks at AFCON

Former Ghana International, Nii Odartey Lamptey, has said in an interview on Happy FM’s ‘Anopa Bosuo Sports’ with Ohene Brenya-Bampoe, that Ghanaians will blame Former Captain, Asamoah Gyan for any pitfalls at the Blacks Stars camp during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to the former U-17 star , the stand-off between Asamoah Gyan and the coach of the senior team, Kwesi Appiah over the captaincy issue will make it possible for any Ghanaian to blame Gyan for the slightest thing that happens at AFCON .

“Ideally they should have allowed Asamoah Gyan to take the team to Egypt then after the tournament, it can be taken from him or it should have been done six months ago not now. I can’t tell Asamoah Gyan to reject the General Captaincy role but my fear is that people will attribute anything bad that happens in camp to him and this captaincy issues,” Odartey Lamptey said.

Concerning Gyan’s decision to make a return after announcing his retirement, Odartey Lamptey insisted that he should have maintained his position.

“He should have maintained his retirement but nobody can reject a Presidential request.”

Kwesi Appiah has named Andre Ayew as the new captain of the team ahead of the tournament with the former skipper of the side Asamoah Gyan elevated to General captain.
