Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahene has appealed to the National Chairperson of the opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cease making comments concerning the National Identification Authority (NIA) registration which is not befitting his position.
Addressing a news conference Thursday, 14th May 2020, National Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, alleged that the NIA had decided to suppress votes in the NDC strongholds while increasing the number of registration centres in the Ashanti region.
“Ladies and gentlemen, in sharp contrast to the suppression of Ghana card registration in most regions which are known to be NDC strongholds, the Ken Attafuah-led NIA massively mobilized an unprecedented number of equipment for the registration exercise in the stronghold of the ruling NPP, the Ashanti Region”, he said.
Reacting to Ofosu Ampofo’s statement, Nana Obiri Boahen in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show expressed: “I was saddened by Ofosu Ampofo’s statement. His argument about Ashanti region receiving a lot of machines from the NIA was ethnocentric politics. He is a leader and he should speak as one. It would have been pardoned if it was said by one of the young ones. He was once the minister for local government and now he is the chairman of a political party. Tell him that he should stop and let the youth engage in such comments.”
He advised that if the NDC was dissatisfied with the process by the NIA and the electoral commission, they must petition to the highest court of the land rather than hold press conferences which are “much ado about nothing”. “The remedies of all these things lie in going to the courts. If they face a problem, they should go to court and resolve it”, he added.
