Nurses and Midwives Association reacts to news of baby-selling by medical professionals

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has expressed shock at the news of medical professionals selling babies to others for amounts of 30,000 Ghana Cedis and 28,000 Ghana Cedis.

Public Relations Officer of the Association, Joseph Krampah, in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show expressed: “We were shocked when we heard the news. This is a news that has really worried us. While we have heard the news circulating, we will carry out an investigation to ascertain whether these people involved in the baby harvesting are really nurses before we can take the next step”.

Joseph stated that he found it difficult to wrap his head around why professionally trained medical workers will engage in such illegal activities.

“Selling of babies is not part of the nurses’ profession. We have processes for adoption and all that but to the extent of selling them, this is my first time hearing of this. How do you sell someone’s child? It is inhumane. It shouldn’t even be mentioned among medical professionals”.

On his part, all nurses and midwives receive the needed training to become professionals in their field and as such their role is to protect and preserve human lives.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Medical and Dental Council begun investigations into illegal acts of baby harvesting’ and ‘human trafficking’ that led to the arrest of some doctors, nurses and social workers.

A joint statement revealed that the investigations were carried into the illegal activities between the periods of June to November, 2020.

Thus far, two medical doctors, two social workers, four nurses, two mothers and one traditional birth attendant have been arrested and are on bail pending further investigations.
