Nungua Child marriage: Naa Okromo to be reunited with family

15-year-old Naa Okromo will be released to her family today, April 18, 2024, after a directive from the Attorney General’s office. This follows a recent child marriage case that had drawn significant public attention.

According to Dakoa Newman, the Minister Designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, a psychological and medical evaluation has confirmed that Naa Okromo is not pregnant.

The Attorney General has advised that, in the best interest of the child and per Ghana’s Children’s Act, Naa Okromo should be reunited with her parents.

“The child will be reunited with her family today, April 18, 2024, after her parents have signed a bond,” Darkoa Newman stated at a press conference.

The case had previously seen the Office of the Gborbu-Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, announcing that they were expecting Naa Okromo’s arrival on April 14, 2024, to commence traditional rites ahead of the Homowo festivities.

However, the Attorney General’s directive has now superseded this plan, prioritizing the well-being and rights of the child.
