NUGS gives WAEC one-week ultimatum to release withheld WASSCE results

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has issued a one-week ultimatum to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release all withheld results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The student body has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the delay, warning that failure to comply will result in nationwide protests and legal action.

Speaking at a media briefing, NUGS President Daniel Korley noted that the delay in releasing the results has caused significant distress among affected students, many of whom are awaiting their results to proceed with their education and career plans. The union insists that WAEC has had ample time to review and resolve any concerns since being formally petitioned on January 2, 2025.

NUGS is calling on WAEC to ensure that such delays do not happen in the future. The union argues that if malpractice cases arise, only the affected subjects should be canceled rather than an entire result. Furthermore, students whose results have been withheld should have the opportunity to appeal any decision before a final verdict is made.

The student body also criticized WAEC’s approach to handling examination irregularities, stressing that an entire set of results should not be withheld due to isolated cases of malpractice. They are demanding an immediate review of the current situation to ensure fairness for all candidates.

If WAEC fails to release the results within the stipulated time, NUGS has vowed to mobilize students across the country for protests at WAEC offices. Additionally, the union has called on the government to consider alternative examination bodies if WAEC is unable to efficiently manage the examination process.

NUGS remains firm in its position and has assured students that it will continue to advocate for their rights until the issue is resolved.
