The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has taken a decision to support the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) as they embark on a strike action today.
General Secretary of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Julius Kwame Anthony, has indicated that UTAG over the years has shown good faith in all their negotiations with government and has also been very considerate with students “but we have come to a point where we have no choice but to look at their considerations as well.”
In an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, Julius Kwame Anthony, explained “Looking at the issues that happened in previous years, especially last year where we appealed to UTAG to withdraw their strike action to help us complete our academic calendar, we have taken the decision to now support the UTAG strike action. It looks like gov’t is also refusing to pay attention to their (UTAG) needs from all indications.”
Describing now as a good time for UTAG to embark on a strike action as academic work is yet to fully start, Mr. Anthony urged government and the Association to resolve their differences. “this issue needs to be resolved before the middle of the semester. Government is using delay tactics on UTAG and it is becoming distasteful and that is why we are siding with UTAG on this matter.”
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has directed its members to withdraw teaching and related activities with effect from Monday, 10th January, 2022 until further notice.
According to UTAG, the strike action is in response to “the worsening Conditions of Service (CoS) of the University Teacher and the failure of the Employer in addressing the plight of UTAG members within the agreed timelines.”
