The Concerned National Service Scheme (NSS) Personnel Association of Ghana has expressed their dissatisfaction over unpaid allowances.
The association announced a nationwide strike starting Wednesday, July 3, 2024, until their allowances are paid.
The association highlighted several issues driving the strike, including the inability to pay for accommodation and utilities, transportation to their user agencies, and food at their workplaces. They also mentioned having to borrow money to survive due to unpaid allowances, which has caused health problems.
They stated that the government currently owes trainees five months’ allowance and university graduates three months’ allowance.
They noted that according to NSS rules and regulations, personnel who fail to report for duty within three months of their posting will face sanctions. However, they emphasized that they have been working under challenging conditions without allowances for five and three months, respectively.
The association described the situation as akin to slavery, arguing that their workforce is being undermined and their service to the nation is not properly recognized.
Speaking to Happy Kaseɛbɔ, Lead Advocate for the association, Savior Dogbe from the Oti district in the Oti Region, called on stakeholders to their aid.
