NPP Primaries: Delegates Declare Support for Atta Akyea

At exactly 12 hours GMT on Thursday, 20th February 2020, the NPP Constituency Party Office in Kyebi erupted with joy and jubilation as about 500 faithful delegates and supporters accompanied Mrs Phillipina Akyea, the wife of Honourable Samuel Atta Akyea, to submit the nomination forms for and on behalf of the incumbent Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South Constituency. The crowd was unable to contain their excitement. “We need Atta Akyea!” and “4 more for Nana, 4 more for Honorable Atta Akyea,” were chanted by the crowd.

Support for the Minister

The Minister for Works and Housing, Honourable Samuel Atta Akyea has been the MP for Abuakwa South Constituency ever since His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo passed the baton to him in 2008.  Lawyer Atta Akyea is running for a fourth term and the consensus amongst party delegates is that this contest is likely to be his easiest. Mr. Kingsley Agyemang, a prospective contestant, personally withdrew from the race to fully support the Minister and incumbent MP, Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea. The only other contestant for the NPP primaries is a Madam Gloria Boadu.

According to Constituency Executives, it is Honourable Atta Akyea’s proven track record in spearheading development in the Abuakwa South Constituency that tilts the scales in his favour. It is predicted that, due to the overwhelming number of delegates who have declared their support for Honorable Atta Akyea, come April 25 when the results of the polls are announced Honorable Atta Akyea will pull over 90 per cent of the votes.

His Achievements

Under his leadership, the constituency has flourished. Madam Patience Asare, a party faithful speaking to us explained, “We love him! You see, if you know Atta Akyea, you will just love him. The man is simple but hard working. She explained further that she believes that come April 25, it will be an automatic win for the minister as he deserves another 4 years just like the President to continue his good works.

“He has brought boreholes to communities. I mean you used to see school children carrying buckets of water on their heads. He has brought school buildings, roads, streetlights, the CHPS compound, and a lot more. Many children are in school because he is ever ready to assist a needy child,” Madam Asare added.

Several other delegates clad in ‘NPP’ T-shirts, shared similar positive stories on the performance of the Honourable MP in the area. Over the past three years of the NPP’s administration, the constituency has witnessed several developmental projects spearheaded by the MP, which includes the J.B Danquah Memorial Library which was commissioned by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana.

The filing process was largely peaceful. Receiving the forms on behalf of the party, the Constituency Chairman, Mr Boakye Yiadom called for unity and decorous campaign devoid of name-calling and mudslinging.

Party-wide Encouragement

Mrs Phillipina Akyea, Managing Partner of Zoe, Akyea & Co and Founder & Executive Director of the Pinamaa Foundation, complimented the supporters of all the candidates for their decorum. “We are one people and we have the same vision – the development of Abuakwa South Constituency and the advancement of the nation Ghana as a whole. The overall interest of the great elephant party should guide us in all we do,” she said. She thanked all the delegates for throwing their weight behind Honourable Atta Akyea and assured them of more developmental works within the constituency.
