NPP plans private sector takeover for ECG's retail services to improve quality service

The Spokesperson on Energy and Power for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 manifesto, Kojo Nsafua Poku has announced plans for private sector participation in the energy sector.

During the NPP’s press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, he addressed the widespread dissatisfaction with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), highlighting issues such as faulty metering, difficulty in obtaining meters, and delayed response to reported faults.

He stated that the NPP’s manifesto proposes the introduction of a retail market as part of their strategy to reduce the cost of living.

The plan involves bringing in private sector participation (PSP) to manage the retail aspect of ECG’s operations.

According to him, this move would allow private companies to handle metering and customer service, thereby enhancing the quality of service that Ghanaians expect from the electricity sector.
