Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has announced the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its affiliated lawmakers will not participate in today’s parliamentary proceedings. This decision stems from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) occupying the majority seats, despite the Supreme Court’s ruling to halt the declaration of four MPs’ seats vacant.
Addressing the press ahead of the sitting on Tuesday October 22, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the NPP prioritizes peace and will take all necessary steps to protect it. He urged the NDC to respect the Supreme Court’s decision, citing it as the highest law body in the land.
“The NDC’s actions undermine the rule of law and disregard the Supreme Court’s authority, we cannot engage in parliamentary business with a party that disregards the law,” Afenyo-Markin stated
The Majority Leader clarified that the NPP’s boycott will continue until the Speaker of Parliament clarifies the seating arrangements, determining which party holds the majority and minority positions.
This development adds to the ongoing tensions within Ghana’s Parliament, highlighting the deep divisions between the NPP and NDC.
