The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) president, Ben Nunoo Mensah says the inability of government to provide funds for Federations to compete in international competitions is slowing killing these sports.
According to him, lack of funding is a major factor leading to the country’s poor performances in international competition.
He disclosed there is a huge chance for any discipline to qualify for international competitions but it all goes down to preparations.
“The Olympic Games comes every four years but the lack of support to these Federations to take part in competitions is what is hampering the progress”, he noted.
He revealed that, “Based on our current performances we can say track and field, weightlifting, judo, swimming and football can qualify for the Olympic Games.
He passionate appealed to the government to put their weight behind the other disciplines as they do football. “The money needed by these Federations is just a fraction of what is given football.”
For the youth to excel and be interested in other sports disciplines, it is important much money is invested than what is happening now.
