The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has commended the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss petitions against the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, describing the ruling as long overdue.
He criticized the protracted legal proceedings as an unnecessary distraction, asserting that the process had wasted valuable time.
The Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision by a seven-member panel led by Justice Lovelace Avril Johnson, dismissed petitions filed by broadcast journalist and lawyer Richard Dela Sky and equality advocate Amanda Odoi. The petitioners had sought to have the anti-LGBTQI bill declared unconstitutional, arguing that its legislative process violated quorum requirements under Articles 102 and 104 of the 1992 Constitution.
The court, however, ruled that the legislative process for the proposed bill was consistent with the constitution.
It emphasized that judicial review of a bill’s constitutionality can only be conducted after it receives presidential assent and becomes enforceable law.
