Niger’s military leaders have released over 50 detainees, including former ministers and senior army officers, who were arrested following the July 2023 coup.
Among those freed are the former ministers of defence, oil, and finance, as well as individuals accused of plotting previous coups.
However, ousted President Mohamed Bazoum remains under house arrest, despite international demands for his release.
Justice Minister Aliyou Daouda defended Bazoum’s continued detention, citing concerns over national security and sovereignty.
President Bazoum faces accusations of undermining national security and high treason.
The detainees’ release follows recommendations from a national conference held in February, which also extended General Abdourahamane Tiani’s rule by five years.
