Nigerian Musician, Ayanfe has revealed that the Nigerian youth in Ghana plan to organize a demonstration against the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police.
He noted that the protest is to bring an end to youth harassment at the hands of SARS officers.
According to him, officers of SARS
have reduced their mandate from crime check to youth extortion.
Describing the misdeeds of SARS officers in an interview with Happy 98.9 FM, the young artiste said, “SARS is made up of men in uniform trying to extort the youth. When they see any young person riding a nice car, wearing nice clothes or with dreads, they try to extort you”.
Talking about the recent demonstrations by the youth of Nigeria calling for the disbandment of SARS, he noted that numerous reports had been made to the police and the federal government but nothing was done about it. “So we took to the streets to talk about it”.
The DMW signee furthered that the police would take the phones of the youth and go through suspecting any fancy youth of being engaged in cyber crime.
“It is sad and we need to change the situation in Nigeria”.
He appealed to the federal government to reform the police unit to put an end to police harassment.
The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) was a Nigerian Police Force unit under the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.
It was disbanded on October 11, 2020 following a widespread protest from Nigerians worldwide.
SARS was under controversy for being linked to acts of extortion, torture, framing and blackmail thus leading to the protest that resulted in it being dissolved.
Demonstrators still remain unhappy following Sunday’s announcement that officers are being redeployed to other units rather than being disciplined.
