Former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Akwasi Oppong Fosu, has assured Ghanaians that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is working on alternative policies to revamp the current flagship programmes under the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to him, the implementation of the flagship programmes under the Akufo-Addo government is “non-existent”.
In an interview on e.tv Ghana’s “Fact Sheet” show, the Executive member of the NDC indicated that attempts of the opposition party to contribute to an enhancement of some “flawed projects” have proved futile. Hence, they have resolved to work behind closed doors awaiting the 2024 elections.
“While all these flawed flagship programmes are going on, we’ve been speaking to some of the issues. With all that has been happening in the country, you realize that there’s this kind of posture towards embracing criticisms and others who have alternative views. That has been the posture of the ruling government. So what is the point in confronting a regime that is not prepared to open up to dialogues and hear the other side of what they’re doing which is not benefiting the citizens,” he said.
Reacting to the importance of having a hang Parliament for the first time in the country’s political history, he argued the ruling government has been branded as a “retrogressive agent”. Hence the Minority has had some big calls rescinded over public backlash fueled by the NPP.
“Ghanaians will recall the issue of the e-levy and how it dragged for so long. Eventually, pillars of society, influential voices were of the view that the NDC must allow this policy to be implemented otherwise the economy was going to collapse. So these are some of the issues and that when it gets to a point you’d have to take a step back. Otherwise you’ll be the one seen as undermining or derailing the efforts of government,” he added.
