Abigail Elorm Akwambea Mensah, the Deputy National Women’s Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a scathing response to Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency and Minister for Fisheries, over recent comments made regarding rent costs in Ghana.
In a previous interview with Onua Fm/ Onua Tv, Hawa Koomson was quoted as saying, “If you think rent is expensive in Ghana, go to Canada and see,” a statement that has gone on to draw sharp criticism from Abigail Mensah and others.
Abigail Mensah expressed her disappointment in Madam Koomson’s remarks, stating that they are insensitive and demonstrate a lack of understanding of the challenges faced by ordinary Ghanaians.
“As a Woman, Wife and most importantly a mother, one would have thought she will understand the plight of these young Ghanaians who are frustrated and suffering under this cruel administration which she is part of but as usually of them, the ordinary Ghanaian doesn’t matter,” she stated.
The NDC executive highlighted the promises made by the ruling government regarding support for rent payments during the 2016 and 2020 elections, accusing them of failing to fulfill these commitments.
She argued that instead of dismissing the concerns of Ghanaians, the government should be working to alleviate the burden of accommodation costs on its citizens.
Abigail Mensah also criticized Hawa Koomson’s track record, labeling her comments as part of a pattern of insensitivity displayed by the NPP government. She pointed to the NPP MP’s recent appointment as Dr. Bawumia’s Campaign Coordinator for the Coastal Belt as further evidence of this insensitivity.
“The Minister in question’s latest utterance is not too surprising to many Ghanaians as it only adds up to a plethora of despicable comments made by her over the last 7 years. It reflects the general mentality and character trait of this NPP government and is evident in her latest appointment as Bawumia’s Campaign Coordinator for the Coastal Belt,” she added.
In contrast, Abigail Mensah assured Ghanaians that the NDC, under the leadership of John Mahama, is committed to improving living conditions across all sectors.
She outlined several proposed policies aimed at addressing these challenges, including the implementation of a 24 Hour Economy policy, Free Primary Healthcare, and the Big Push Agenda to drive industrialization.
“Ironically, a government that cannot print Passport books for Ghanaian applicants because of incompetence, corruption and needless bureaucracy, is today calling the bluff of young Ghanaians and is asking them to flee the country if they deem rent cost to be expensive. Which document do they expect ordinary Ghanaians to travel with?”
