The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has signaled its support for the proposed change in the national election date, advocating for the reform to commence in 2028.

This development emerged following an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting where the Electoral Commission presented its proposal to shift the election date from December 7 to November 7.

The NDC, initially opposing the proposal last week, has now shifted its stance to allow the Electoral Commission to implement the reform. However, the party proposes that the change should take effect starting from the 2028 election cycle.

Dr. Omane Boamah, the Director of Elections for the NDC, disclosed that this decision was reached through a consensus during Monday’s meeting.

“The NPP agreed that the date of effectiveness should not be 2024. They agreed,” stated Dr. Boamah.

Contrary to this claim, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) disputes the assertion made by the NDC.

Evans Nimako, the Director of Elections for the NPP, rejected the idea that the NPP supported a delayed implementation and insisted that the party desires the change to be effective for the 2024 election.

Nimako questioned the NDC’s representation of the NPP’s stance, stating, “Others who said the EC should consider changing it said it could be considered in 2028. So what is this position that the NPP supported the position that should be done in the next elections? Do they speak for us?”

He further noted the NPP’s confidence in winning elections and highlighted the party’s perplexity at the reluctance to embrace the proposed change even if it could potentially enhance their chances of victory.
