NDC accuses Electoral Commission of plotting to deny its candidate in Amenfi Central

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of employing a new strategy to prevent the party from fielding a parliamentary candidate in the Amenfi Central constituency ahead of the 2024 elections.

In a statement shared on Thursday, October 17, 2024, via Facebook, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, Dr. Omane Boamah, expressed concern over what he described as recurring attempts by the EC to undermine the electoral process.

He cited the events of the 2020 elections, where voters from Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) were allegedly disenfranchised, resulting in what the NDC considers the unfair victory of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Peter Amewu, in the Hohoe parliamentary contest. He warned that the EC appears to be engaging in similar tactics in Amenfi Central, a crucial battleground ahead of the 2024 polls.

The statement emphasized the party’s readiness to resist any form of electoral manipulation to ensure victory and reset the nation. NDC supporters and the public were urged to remain vigilant, with the reminder to keep eagle eyes on both the EC and the NPP.

He also reiterated the party’s Presidential Candidate John Dramani Mahama’s promise to create well-paying jobs through the introduction of a 24-hour economy. He underscored the hope Mahama brings to the political landscape and called on Ghanaians to support him for a fresh start in 2024.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana disqualified Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central, from the 2024 elections due to an interlocutory injunction issued by the Sekondi High Court on May 31, 2024. The injunction, filed by five applicants—Gyedu Frimpong, Akubilla Daniel, Enock Ntiamoh, Isaac Twum, and Doris Aidoo—alleges that Cudjoe forged her voter ID and NDC membership card, barring her from holding herself out as the party’s candidate until the case is resolved.

In an October 10 letter, Deputy EC Chairman Samuel Tettey reaffirmed the disqualification, stating that the Commission is bound by the ongoing court order, which has not been overturned or suspended.
