Nana Yaw Amponsah: Five things he must do to succeed at Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko has appointed Nana Yaw Amponsah to become the club’s new Chief Executive Officer.

The appointment of the 2019 Ghana FA presidential candidate has been met with a lot of merrymaking especially by the fans due to his in-depth knowledge in modern football administration.

Asante Kotoko in recent times have been hit with a lot of managerial failures and the newly constituted Board led by Dr Kwame Kyei have decided to turn a new leaf with the appointment of Nana Yaw Amponsah to lead the club.

Below are some key areas the new boss should look into to succeed at the club

1.Supporters

Asante Kotoko arguably has the biggest fan base in Ghana and there is constant pressure and demand from the supporters for the club to succeed at all cost.

Nana Yaw Amponsah must liaise with the supporters if he wants to succeed at the club. The heart of the club is the fans and he must win them first in order to succeed.

“I’m expecting Nana Yaw Amponsah to get closer and engage the supporters in his doings. We (Supporters) are hoping to have a good working relationship with him to help improve Kotoko,” f

“Looking at the past CEO’s, you could always see a fully packed stadium whenever Kotoko had a game. The strategy was that they got closer to the supporters,”, former Asante Kotoko Supporter’s Chief Obeng Sekyere told the media in an interview on how Nana Yaw Amponsah can succeed at the club.

  1. Transfer policy of the club

The Porcupine Warriors have one of the weakest transfer policy and structure in the country. The club has lost millions of Ghana cedis as a result and the team continues to recruit and discard players every season. George Abege, Adingara Bidodane Moussa have been some of the worst signings done by the club in recent times without any plan or structure. Nana Yaw Amponsah must set up a Technical Director or appoint a Director of Football to solve this problem to save the club financially. A youth side or academy will go along way to help groom and develop players for the team which should be a key area for him to consider.

  1. Management team

Asante Kotoko’s management and communication team has been a problem under each of the previous administration in recent times. From management members spilling out club secrets and resigning, Nana Yaw Amponsah must appoint loyal and trusted soldiers with approval from the Board that he can work with.

  1. Set up a proper and effective communications team

In this era of social media and technology, one of the effective means to reach millions of fans across the globe is through social media. Asante Kotoko is active on social media but content creation must be improved to reach and attract more people to the club. A club with one of the biggest fan bases should be reaching over 1 million followers or subscribers on the handles if they are doing things right.

Also, it is time to set up a communications team which will be headed by a professional where all club communication will be channelled through. This should be an era where all management members without authorisation speaking in the media about key issues concerning the club becomes a thing of the past.

  1. Domestic and Continent glory

Asante Kotoko pursuit of a continental trophy should be one of the key areas for the new CEO. Asante Kotoko has failed to win a continental trophy since they last won it in 1983. The owner and life patron of the club Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in one of the club’s visits to the Palace made a demand of the club to win a continental trophy which has eluded the team for several decades.

Nana Yaw Amponsah must aim at this title but must first ensure the club is competing at the highest level to achieve this by so doing winning domestic laurels with a very competitive team. The recruitment policy, with a good technical team which will be speared by him with financial support from the Board, will make this dream achievable.
