Mozambique’s top court after months of unrest in the East African country have declared ruling party, FRELIMO as winner of the 2024 elections.
The initial declaration of the party as winners of the election by election authorities triggered what has been described as the biggest protest yet in the country’s history.
The country’s top court and its council according to reports, has the final say over the electoral process and its ruling is likely to spark further protests in Mozambique, an Eastern African country of close to 35 million people that Frelimo has governed since 1975.
Reports also indicate that international observers have expressed dissatisfaction with the election and processes involved.
Civil society monitoring group, Plataforma Decide have confirmed the deaths of 130 people in clashes with police, and many others injured during retaliation by protestants against authorities committed to restore calm.
