Mozambique: 3 dead after defense ministry deploys army

Latest reports of post-election protest in Mozambique after clashes with police on Friday indicate that at least three (3) people have died.

Independent candidate Venancio Mondlane, part of the leaders of the protestors has been alleging electoral fraud occurred during the October 9 polls. These allegations which are boldly backed by the Podemos party, have seen many citizens gather over the past few weeks to express their frustration and disagreement with the results.

The announcement of casualties which were made by Maputo’s largest hospital followed warnings that were made by the nation’s defense minister Gen. Cristóvão Artur Chume who threatened to deploy the army and warned against attempts to grab power on Thursday.

The hospital indicated that sixty-six people had been injured as the military engaged in extensive maneuvers to mitigate lawless behavior of protesters

The casualties add up to the at least 20 that Amnesty International reported Wednesday (Nov. 06) since the beginning of the protests in late October.
