The Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has revealed that his ministry has settled a $3million payment to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for the broadcast rights of the 2024 All African Games.
The payment, made in full, covers the cost of GBC’s coverage of the continental event, which was held in Accra four months ago. According to the minister, this payment brings the matter to a close, with GBC having delivered on its broadcasting obligations for the Games.
Mustapha Ussif was compelled to clarify the payment status to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) when he faced questioning from Ningo-Prampram MP, Samuel George, during his appearance before the Public Accounts Committee on Monday, August 19, 2024. George’s inquiry prompted Ussif to reveal that the ministry had indeed paid $3million to GBC, settling the outstanding amount for the state broadcaster’s coverage of the 2024 All African Games.
Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George explained that his inquiry was motivated by concerns that many technicians who worked on the All African Games had yet to receive their payment. He sought to determine whether the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) had been paid for its broadcasting services and, if so, the exact amount, in order to understand the disparity in payment for those involved in the event.
Sam George indicated that the Public Accounts Committee will pursue the matter further with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) during their next appearance before the committee. The committee will demand explanations from GBC on why they have failed to settle the payments due to the technicians who worked on the All African Games, despite reportedly receiving payment from the government.
