The flag bearer of the ruling New Partriotic party, Vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has disclosed that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives will be elected locally to reduce the powers of the President.

According to Dr Bawumia, the MMDCEs being elected locally but not appointed by the President is one of the ways to reduce the Presidential Powers given to him should he be elected.

Delivering a keynote address during a courtesy call on Ashanti Regional house of chiefs today Monday 10th June 2024 as part of his 3 day campaign tour, he said it was something that the Npp led administration has thought about and it’s something that he will still work on because it’s very important.

” The drafting of the 1992 Constitution was largely
made to give Former President the late flight lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings to give him more powers during his military regime and that is why we want to reduce the powers of the President”.

Answering Denyaseman Queen mother, Nana Adutwiwaa Bonin III question on curtailing the menace of illegal mining, Dr Bawumia said small scale mining would be regulated through licensing to prevent too much exploitation of the land, the geological survey department will also be empowered to map the exact places of the mineral reserves and demacate those areas for mining to prevent the trial and error way carried out by illegal miners causing destruction to our lands.
