Menzgold victims demand bailout; threaten to boycott 2024 elections

A group of customers affected by the collapse of Menzgold Ghana is urging the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to provide economic relief or risk losing their support in the upcoming elections next week.

The association is requesting a bailout of GHC200 million from the government, suggesting that the seized assets of the defunct gold dealership firm could be used as guarantee for the financial package.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 25, the association stressed the growing toll of the crisis, noting that over 230 customers have died, a significant increase from the reported figure of fewer than 100 deaths in 2020 when they first appealed for support. They emphasized that the seized assets could serve as collateral to ensure the government’s financial intervention.

They have called on the government to address their demands by close of the day. Customers of Menzgold have been unable to recover their investments since the company shut down in 2018.
