Mahama’s landslide victory a warning to the NPP – Expert

Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast and astute political analyst, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere has cautioned the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be wary of John Mahama’s landslide victory in the just-ended National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primaries.

In a recent interview on e.tv Ghana’s Fact Sheet with Samuel Eshun, Dr. Otchere emphasized the significance of former President Mahama’s resounding victory in the NDC presidential primaries.

Dr. Otchere stated that Mahama’s triumph should serve as a warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the NDC’s unity and strength.

“The message that the NDC delegates sent is not just for Dr. Duffuor or Kojo Bonsu. It’s not only for internal consumption but for external and public consumption,” Dr. Otchere said. “Mahama’s victory is a warning to the NPP that if there’s anything called disunity, then it is infinitesimal – very, very minute in the party.”

Highlighting the cohesive nature of the NDC’s presidential campaign, Dr. Otchere praised the unity exhibited by the party’s leadership.

He noted the positive statements made by the NDC’s flagbearership candidate, Kojo Bonsu, and the recently onboarded Dr. Duffuor, who congratulated Mahama on his impressive win as a huge sign of tranquility within the party.

“So by and large, on the presidential aspect of the NDC elections, the group has been fantastic, and I don’t think there was any single skirmish when it comes to the presidential.”

The political analyst further emphasized that Mahama’s landslide victory signifies the NDC’s unwavering commitment to reclaiming power in the upcoming general elections. Dr. Otchere’s analysis suggests that the NPP should not underestimate the NDC’s ability to unite and mobilize support, as evidenced by the overwhelming support for Mahama within the party.

Former President Mahama who later went in a two-horse presidential contest with Former Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu after Dr. Kwabena Duffuor’s withdrawal amassed a total of 98.8 per cent to be elected the NDC flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
