President John Mahama has taken decisive steps to tackle the growing food shortages affecting Senior High Schools (SHS) nationwide.
Speaking at a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held in Accra on Sunday, January 12, 2025, he acknowledged the difficulties in providing adequate meals for students and outlined immediate measures to address the crisis.
“We have a challenge currently with feeding students in secondary schools. As a stopgap measure, I have asked the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service to allocate and evacuate food that is currently held in warehouses in Tema” he stated.
President Mahama went on to order the deployment of existing food supplies, initially imported to address past droughts, to guarantee adequate nutrition for students and maintain the smooth running of academic activities.
He reaffirmed the commitment to upholding the integrity of the Free SHS policy, stressing that logistical challenges must not hinder students’ access to education.
Earlier, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) had raised concerns over the critical food shortages, appealing to parents to support their children with additional meals due to inadequate supplies.
