Mahama gave us peanuts for winning AFCON trophies – George Alhassan

Black Stars Legend, George Alhassan has revealed how former Black Stars players got peanuts for winning AFCON trophies for the country.

“I was not around when the money was shared, so my daughter went for it. She was given 10,000 for the two trophies I won. I don’t know if it was in cedis or dollars”, he bemoaned.

Alhassan won two Africa Cup of Nations trophies and a goal king accolade at the 1982 AFCON tourney. Today marks 37 years since the Black Stars won their 4th trophy. The prolific striker known in his hey days as ‘Jairzinho’, emerged as the top scorer in the 1982 edition.

Speaking to Ohene Bampoe-Brenya on Happy FM’s ‘Anopa Bosuo Sports’, Alhassan believes the money didn’t compare to the joy they brought to the Nation.

The John Mahama led administration in 2014 presented a cheque of GH¢ 1.7m to the Black Stars squads that won the African Cup of Nations trophy in 1963, 65, 78 & 82 respectively.

Ghana have not won the coveted trophy for over three decades, with the last one won in 1982 in Libya.

The Black Stars have since reached the finals of the competition three times, in 1992, 2010 and 2015 but are yet to win the elusive fifth title.
