Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko has been appointed Acting Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA) by President John Dramani Mahama.
The announcement was shared on the NCA’s official Facebook page on Friday, January 24.
Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko’s appointment as Acting Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA) comes in the wake of the resignation of his predecessor, Joe Anokye, earlier this month.
Mr. Anokye, who served as Director-General under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, stepped down amidst speculation about his future plans.
In his new role, Rev. Fianko will be tasked with building on the achievements of his predecessors while tackling the dynamic challenges of Ghana’s telecommunications sector.
The National Communications Authority (NCA), the regulatory body overseeing telecommunications, broadcasting, and electronic communications in Ghana, plays a vital role in maintaining a robust, inclusive, and globally competitive digital ecosystem.
In recent years, Ghana’s telecommunications sector has experienced remarkable advancements, including the expansion of broadband infrastructure, the deployment of 4G and 5G networks, and growing consumer expectations for improved services.
As Acting Director-General, Rev. Fianko is tasked with leading efforts to strengthen regulatory frameworks, promote innovation, and tackle key challenges such as data protection, cybersecurity, and ensuring fair competition among operators.
A critical issue on his agenda is the ongoing debate over spectrum allocation and the need for its equitable distribution across industry stakeholders.
