More than 750 Liberians have been repatriated from Ghana following the demolition of the Buduburam refugee camp in the Gomoa East District, Central region, with more scheduled to be repatriated in the coming weeks as the Liberian government continues its efforts to repatriate its citizens.
The government of Ghana and the Liberian Embassy collaborated to take this initiative.
The Buduburam camp was razed on February 27, 2024, leaving approximately 600 individuals, including both Liberians and Ghanaians, without a place to call home. Although the demolition was initially slated for 2021, it was delayed due to residents’ appeals for more time. However, growing worries about the escalating crime rate in the area, voiced by local chiefs and residents, ultimately led to the camp’s demolition.
In an interview, the Liberians shared mixed emotions about their repatriation, with some expressing excitement to return home while others voiced disappointment.
According to reports approximately 6,000 Liberians currently reside at Buduburam, with 750 individuals comprising the initial batch to be repatriated.
An additional batch is scheduled for evacuation next week, marking a significant step in the repatriation process.
