La Coalition demonstration hit snag as Police reject planned route

A contentious disagreement has emerged between the police and the organizers of the La Coalition demonstration, scheduled to take place today, over the planned protest route. The Coalition of La Association and the Ga Dangme Coalition Against Injustice commenced its protest against what they see as unethical land seizures by police entities in the Greater Accra Region.

Their focus is on the Trade Fair Land which includes areas where Labadi beach and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel is located. The claim the original landowners have not received the legally mandated compensation leading to today’s protest. The police authorities are refusing to guarantee the safety and security of participants if they proceed with their intention to march to Kpletso, near the sensitive Burma Camp area.

This has led to a heated and intense argument between the demonstrators and the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Arhin, who is insisting on an alternative route to ensure public safety and order. The standoff has created uncertainty over whether the demonstration will proceed as planned, with both sides dug in over their respective positions.
