Barring any last-minute hitches, the renal unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital will be re-opened to patients today, November 6, 2023.
This is decision was adopted at a meeting held last Friday, November 3, where it was unanimously agreed that the facility should begin accepting outpatients today after months of closure.
The unit had been closed to outpatients since May 22, 2023, which forced patients to seek dialysis services elsewhere, primarily in private hospitals or facilities.
A partial reopening of the unit occurred on September 27, with an announcement of an increase in dialysis treatment per session from GH¢380 to GHS¢765.42.
However, this increase was reversed after a public uproar, and the unit remained closed to outpatients.
The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, had directed the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to immediately reopen the unit.
