The Concerned Citizens of the Komenda Traditional Area have informed the Ghana Police Service of their intention to hold a demonstration against the lease of the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian firm.
The protest, initially scheduled for August 13, 2024, in Komenda, will now take place in Accra on September 17, 2024.
The demonstrators are demanding the reversal of the lease agreement, calling for the factory to return to its original purpose of processing locally grown sugarcane instead of importing raw sugar.
They argue that the lease agreement was made without proper procedural adherence and stakeholder consultation.
The residents, in a statement on September 3, 2024, notified the police pursuant to Section 1 clause 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).
The group is expecting a minimum of 5,000 concerned Ghanaians from Accra and surrounding regions to participate in the protest, which will commence at 6:00 am from the 37 Lorry Station, Accra, and proceed to the Jubilee House.
The group has requested the police to provide the necessary support and security to ensure the peaceful conduct of the demonstration.
