KNUST unrest: NAPO leads delegation to university; Vice Chancellor to be sacked

The Ministry of Education has sent out a delegation to mediate in the current unrest between furious students and authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The delegation led by the Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh will meet the feuding factions on the university campus Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 10am in an attempt to resolve the ongoing crisis.

This comes on the back of Monday morning demonstration where irate students were seen destroying school property in a violent protest.

The students boycotted classes and poured on the streets of campus protesting alleged brutalities meted out to their colleagues who were arrested at the University Hall last Friday and later granted bail.

The angry students burnt the official vehicle of the Dean of Students and reportedly ransacked the Vice Chancellor’s office. At least one student was injured and is currently receiving treatment at the Hospital.

A statement by the Ministry of Education said it has “noted with concern developments on the campus of the KNUST in Kumasi, particularly with regard to bodily injuries and the detention of some students, as well as the destruction of public property.”

The statement by the Director of Communications added that “the Ministry appeals for calm on all sides as a first step to resolving the difficulties.”

Meanwhile, The University has been closed indefinitely. The Regional Security Council and university authorities have also imposed a 6 am to 6 pm curfew on the school starting today.

The students are expected to vacate the university premises latest by 12 noon Tuesday, October 23, 2018. Only foreign students would be allowed on campus with heavy security presence.

However on Happy FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show today, the Managing Director of State Housing Company (SHC), Kwabena Ampofo Appiah affirmed that the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso should be sacked with immediate effect.

Information also reaching happyghana.com indicates that, the appointment of Prof. Obiri-Danso as the VC maybe terminated following his inability to resolve the current happenings a KNUST amicably.
