The management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is grappling with an increasing debt crisis caused by patients’ inability to pay their medical bills.
According to the hospital’s Deputy Medical Director, Dr. Yaw Ofori Larbi, the situation is unlikely to improve anytime soon, as financial challenges among patients persist.
Dr. Ofori Larbi explained that KATH operates a patient-first policy, ensuring treatment is provided before financial discussions take place. Unlike in the past, when health insurance was unavailable, patients now receive treatment and are billed afterward. However, many patients are unable to settle these bills, adding to the hospital’s financial burden.
To address the issue, he said the hospital employs various interventions. Some patients are offered payment plans, which they may suggest themselves or have recommended by hospital staff. He added that the Social Welfare Unit plays a crucial role in assessing patients facing financial difficulties and determining appropriate support. He noted the inmnterventions may include partial or complete waivers of medical bills, depending on the patient’s circumstances but in some instances, individuals and corporate organizations step in to assist by covering outstanding bills. He said these acts of generosity provide much-needed relief but do not eliminate the financial strain on the hospital.
