African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, H.E Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas has noted that rights of migrants in the African sub region must be respected.
He acknowledged the rights of migrants at the launch of the Kofi Annan Peace and Security Forum which took place on Wednesday, 28 February 2024 at the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre.
He addressed the recent issues of migrant abuse especially in the Sub-Saharan region, which in hand has stymied efforts made towards development and sustainable living in Africa.
He noted that the underlying factor in most cases of migration is the pressing need of a better life and a more stable means of survival. Dr. Chambas added that every migrant is mandated by right to desire and make the necessary decisions to attain these things. “Migrating to seek greener pastures has been mankind’s oldest poverty reduction and development strategy. Every migrant has the right to do so; that is his or her right and that right has to be honored.”
The Kofi Annan Peace and Security Forum 2024, launched earlier today by President of Ghana, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been set as a platform for robust discourse and collaboration among key stakeholders, reaffirming the collective commitment to addressing migration challenges and promoting peace and resilience in Africa.
