Dauda Yasrie, Assembly-man for Kamgbunli electoral area in Ellembelle, has expressed concern about the fish disease crisis in the Ellembelle community.
He disclosed that, the disease was discovered a month ago when some fishermen in the community complained about seeing something unusual with their catch.
According to him, the fishermen saw sores on the fishes.
Dauda Yasrie told Happy Kasiɛbɔ, that their checks revealed the fishes may be unwholesome.
“We went to have a look at it and it was true. It was very strange and we realized it could have a potential health hazard so the chief and elders met the fishermen and one health director who told us it was harmful for consumption and advised that we stop fishing immediately until they find out the cause of the disease and a solution to it”.
He explained that, the temporary ban on fishing due to the disease has caused a lot of hardship in the community as most of the people in the area are fishermen and solely depend on fishing.
“We suspect the disease is as a result of the sea being contaminated and we’re awaiting solutions from the Ghana Fishers Authority who have come for samples of the fishes and water to determine what exactly is the cause of the disease” he said.
