Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has indicated that, while he leads the opposition in Parliament, he is currently giving the government some space to operate rather than mounting a full-scale resistance. According to him, the time for a more aggressive opposition has not yet come.
In an interview with an Accra based TV station monitored by Happyghana.com, Afenyo-Markin recalled how the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) minority strongly opposed his party when they were in government, making governance difficult.
His comments suggest that, although he is taking a measured approach for now, a more forceful opposition stance may emerge in the future.
“I’m saying that for NDC, me, Kwamena I’ve not opposed them. Look, I’ve given them great moments to start their government. Look at the records since 1997 this is the first time that ministers are going through vetting within the shortest possible time. I had to take some criticism from my party, but I defended my stance that, look, I’ve been in government before I’m in opposition now, what is my gain if I frustrate them,” he said.
He praised Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga for his diplomatic leadership and efforts to build consensus between the Majority and Minority caucuses in Parliament.
