President of the Governing Council at Institute of Directors Ghana (IoD-Ghana), Rev. Mrs. Angela Carmen Appiah has emphasized the importance of accountability among directors, especially those leading public companies.
Speaking at the Boardroom Governance Summit on Tuesday October 10 at Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra, she highlighted the multifaceted role of directors, including overseeing daily operations and ensuring the organization’s well-being.
She noted that directors can no longer hide behind the Attorney General, as they are now held accountable for any wrongdoing, including fraudulent activities, negligence, non-compliance with legal requirements, and failure to act in the best interest of the company.
She highlighted that today’s corporate landscape, directors must prioritize accountability to foster growth and success. This sentiment is echoed by experts, who stress that boards have many roles, but the most important is to protect an organization’s shareholders through effective boardroom governance.
She cited that effective board accountability involves transparency, responsible decision-making, and open communication channels. By embracing accountability, directors can reduce risk, improve performance, and align with corporate strategy.
