Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has announced the deployment of 24-hour fire brigades across the country, who will monitor all markets on a 24 hour basis.
The initiative by the minister follows devastating fire outbreaks recorded in the country in 2025, including the recent incident at the Blue Light section of Kumasi Central Business District.
Recognizing the urgent need for proactive measures, the minister announced plans of partnering with the Ministry of Youth Development to train beneficiaries from the Youth Employment Program in fire safety protocols.
He mentioned that, these individuals will work alongside professional firefighters, ensuring markets are continuously manned to prevent and respond swiftly to emergencies.
“We cannot rely on firefighters alone, as their numbers are insufficient”.
Mubarak emphasized that, by integrating trained youth into fire safety operations, the country can strengthen protection and innovation in safeguarding markets.
“This way, we can man our markets 24/7 so that when something happens, they can start the extinguishing process while they call the fire service tenders to come. This requires innovation and partnership”.
