Former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has posted a message on his Twitter account to say he is gay.
Few high-profile current or former male players have ever come out as openly gay in the sport, but Casillas has tweeted: “I hope you respect me: I’m gay.”
The 41-year-old won the World Cup with his country in 2010.
Casillas retired in 2020 after making more than 600 appearances for Real Madrid and Porto.
Earlier this year, teenager Jake Daniels became the first professional in the UK men’s game for more than 30 years to come out while still playing.
