I wouldn’t have been part of 2010 World Cup squad if Agyemang-Badu was not injured – Stephen Appiah

Former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah has recounted how he nearly missed out on Ghana’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Stephen Appiah in 2010 played a role in Ghana’s historic run to the quarter finals but has revealed that injuries to some players probably played in his favor to make the trip to South Africa.

The former Juventus midfielder said he was told by coach Milovan Rajevac that he wouldn’t be a starter but that wouldn’t even have been possible if Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu had been fit.

Stephen Appiah’s statement comes on the back of the decision of coach Otto Addo to drop Andre Ayew from Ghana’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic.

“In 2010, I was lucky to be part of the team. If Agyemang-Badu had been fit, maybe I wouldn’t have been part of the 2010 World Cup, which would have been difficult.”

“You can have senior players in the team, and if you let them understand that this time there are certain good players in the team, but be around, you may get either 20 or 10 minutes, depending on how you train,” he said.
