George Afriyie denies bribery allegations, threatens legal action against retired Referee Alex Kotei

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie has denied allegations made by retired referee Alex Kotei, who claimed George Afriyie attempted to bribe him to influence a match’s outcome.

George Afriyie has since directed his lawyers to take legal action against Alex Kotei, describing the allegations as false and defamatory.

The controversy began when Alex Kotei, who currently serves as the referees’ manager at the GFA, alleged in an interview that Afriyie approached him with money to help his club, Gamba All Blacks, secure a victory against Asante Kotoko during his time as referee. Alex Kotei claimed he refused the bribe, maintaining his integrity.

However, in an exclusive interview on Happy Sports, George Afriyie refuted the claims, stating that Alex Kotei never officiated any of the three games Gamba All Blacks played against Asante Kotoko during his time at the club. Afriyie emphasized that the allegations were baseless and aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

“I have directed my lawyers to take him on, and it’s already in motion,” Afriyie declared, signaling his intention to pursue legal action against Alex Kotei for defamation”.
