I was stripped off the Black Stars captaincy because I couldn’t speak French – Kwasi Appiah reveals

Former Black Stars coach James Kwasi Appiah in an interview with Ghana’s number one Sports Station Happy FM has revealed that he was stripped off the captaincy due to his inability to speak French.

The 56-year old was stripped off the Black Stars captaincy prior to the start of the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) tournament in Senegal.

Appiah confirmed on Wamputu Sports on Happy FM that it was management’s decision to strip him off the captaincy without any prior notice.

“It was true they took away the captaincy from me because they said I couldn’t speak French”

“There wasn’t any communication. If they had discussed with me to make me the General captain and made Abedi the captain I wouldn’t have mind. I was the captain for 4 years”.

Appiah further said, the issue even brought division among the team.

“When the issue happened it even brought disunity into the team and I had to call Abedi for us to settle this”.

“The good thing is it also brought as together.
I will not say that is why we couldn’t win the trophy but a lot of contributing factors”, he concluded.
