“I was so excited” – Medeama’s Fatawu Hamidu on Black Stars call-up

Medeama SC’s left-back, Abdul Fatawu Hamidu, reminisced about his excitement over a past last-minute call-up to join the Black Stars for an international friendly against Liberia.

Fatawu Hamidu received a sudden call from the Black Stars’ technical team, prompted by the absence of Abdul Baba Rahman, who was sidelined due to injury.

The 24-year-old player, who had previously been a consistent performer for Medeama SC, made his first-ever starting appearance under the guidance of coach Chris Hughton during the friendly match against Liberia.

Hamidu grabbed the opportunity with both hands and played the entire duration of the game, contributing significantly to the team’s 3-1 victory over Liberia.

In an exclusive interview with Happy FM’s Ohene Bampoe Brenya, Fatawu shared his emotions, saying, “The moment I received the call to join the team, I was filled with excitement. It has always been my dream to represent the senior national team, and the atmosphere in my team’s camp and with my family was brimming with joy; it was truly a dream come true.”

Throughout the previous season, Fatawu Hamidu made 19 appearances in the Ghanaian Premier League and managed to score two goals. Notably, he played a crucial role in both matches when Medeama faced Nigeria’s Remo Stars SC during the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League qualifiers. Medeama secured advancement to the next round through a thrilling post-match penalty shootout.

The young left-back’s consistent and impressive performances in the Ghana Premier League champions had earned him this well-deserved call-up to the Black Stars, marking a significant moment in his burgeoning football career.

He is included in the Black Stars team getting ready for Ghana’s upcoming double-header friendly matches against Mexico and the USA. These matches are set to take place on the 15th and 18th of October.
